Streatham Meets Pakistan on Raf-Saperra’s Punjabi Rap Heater, “Modern Mirza”

South London rapper Raf-Saperra bridges a trio of worlds on his latest single to round off an impressive breakout year.

The Streatham, South London resident has been tapping into his South Asian roots since the turn of the decade, wisely incorporating global sounds that have wide appeal. “Modern Mirza” is his latest song to showcase the talent. With production from Bobby Kang, “Modern Mirza” fuses Punjabi raps with Bhangra and East Coast hip hop beats, touching bases of England, Pakistan and the States.

Its accompanying music video embodies the traditional spirit, shot in the Pakistani streets of Lahore and Shorkot to match the tone of the song.

Earlier in the year, Raf-Saperra released the track “N.L.S. (Nach Le Soniye)”, which incorporated UK garage with his signature Punjabi Boliyan. It set Saperra as a forward-thinking artist willing to trial various genres and bring them cohesively into his British Asian world. “Modern Mirza” hones the same intentions, appealing to a hattrick of diverse sounds and locations.

“Modern Mirza” precedes Saperra’s debut mixtape, Ruff Around tha Edges, set to land in early January 2023.
